Japanese ABC!
Toro is the Japanese word for 'lantern' while nagashi means 'flow'. This ceremony takes place in the belief that it will help to guide the souls of the departed to the spirit world. Some of the biggest ones have been during the commemoration of those lost in the bombing of Hiroshima. Traditional Japanese tales state that humans come from water, so the lanterns represent their bodies going back to water and in particular to the sea. Can you make your own paper lantern?
